It was on occasions where you saw the three together that you remembered Alana had had a taste of not one, but both your partners in the past.

In itself, that was a jealousy you could contain, especially since it was in the past. The real problem was how she could get all smug about it sometimes.

She wasn't overt about it, though. The secret animosity you two had was not too difficult to conceal, but still you found ways to barb at each other with words sometimes.

Still, you couldn't really protest whenever Hannibal invited her to one of his more lavish dinner parties. And you couldn't stop them from interacting with each other, since you didn't want to cause a scene.

She knew this and used it to her advantage. From across the room, where she was speaking to both of them, you saw her place a hand on Hannibal's arm for a moment. And in that moment, she glanced in your direction and simply winked.

That sent your blood boiling, but you had to plaster on a smile instead as Will spotted you. He excused himself and made his way over, immediately noticing the venom in your eyes and the tightness of your jaw.

"Having a good time?" he asked, something in his tone telling you he already knew the answer.

"Yep, totally."

You winced as Alana's laugh rang out. Had it always been so loud? That, or Hannibal was being the fucking king of comedy at that moment... You couldn't help glancing back over, your smile wavering.

Will noticed this and let out a hum that sounded suspiciously like a chuckle.

"I see," he said. "I can assure you, you have nothing to worry about."

You looked over at him, opening your mouth to defend yourself, but the knowing, amused tug of his lips stopped you. You let out a wry chuckle, taking a sip of your champagne.

"I... know I don't. At least not from you two.” You sighed, tapping the champagne flute impatiently with one finger. “Though I do think she enjoys pushing my buttons… and I’m not entirely sure how far she would go with it, but I do have my suspicions.”

He bumped his arm against yours gently, prompting you to look at him.

“You know we’d never let it get that far,” he said. “Though there’s something to be said about how you look when you get all wound up like that. I don’t know how I didn’t notice before.”

“Momentary slip…” you muttered, irritated.

He chuckled, taking your hand and kissing your knuckles. “Just wait until Hannibal hears about this.”

You shot him a glare. “Really?”

“Oh, yeah.”

I saw it in your tag game post that you're also fond of the Apollo-Heracles conflict 👀 for a myth that appears in only a couple of sources, it sure has a lot of presence in the vase paintings (no seriously, everytime I think I've seen the last of it, I find ten more)

SO do you have any favorites among the paintings that represent this story??

I also think it's extremely interesting that it's a story so popularly portrayed by vase paintings and in such a variety of ways!! It's certainly one of the stories that gets left out of written compilation of Heracles' legend a bit (which is a shame, I think it's a fantastic story) but Apollo had a very peculiar relationship with Heracles in general that I just kind of find amazing (and very, very funny).

Apollo is not a god with any legitimate grudge against Heracles, but he does argue with the mortal a bit like he argues with his favourite brothers 😂Part of why I love the story of Apollo and Heracles fighting over the tripod so much is that it is such a little brother thing for Heracles to be upset with the proclamation his elder brother has given him and so, he throws a great fit, taking up the chair and declaring that he'll just give himself a better prophecy! And Apollo, instead of being a marginally professional big brother, decides to fight him for it until their father has to break up their cat-fight. Like was that not just the plot of the Homeric Hymn to Hermes? Is this not exactly how Apollo treated Hermes when he was a child and now those two are inseparable? 💀

Because of this, my favourite vase paintings tend to be the ones that highlight the personal squabbling between Apollo and Heracles the most. There are some very elaborate ones that have the full host of them - Athena, Heracles, Apollo, Artemis, usually a dog and a doe, I've even seen a couple that had birds and plants etched on them, but the simplest ones that show Heracles about to bonk Apollo with his club out of frustration or depict Heracles nyooming away from Apollo while Apollo (presumably) yells curses about how he's going to fling Heracles head first into Tartarus for daring to take his things? Yeah, those are the premium big brother/little brother things I'm looking for.

I feel so much for Scar in those pre-sleepover rambles T-T He's out here trying to balance his protectiveness with the hermits being like that. And the hermits seemingly not caring that they're hurting him too. Really only Impulse seems to be looking at Scar. It just all feels bad...

And honestly, it's a tricky thing to write, because even though we typically focus on the perspective of Grian and Scar, we don't want to write the other Hermits as mean. In fact, they're not even necessarily in the wrong. Because things really aren't black and white.

They mean well. They're concerned about Grian, and in a way, it is helpful. It's making Grian look inward and think about what he likes and for what reasons. It is a good concern to have, just... executed poorly.

Because they don't know any better.

It's reactionary! They see bruises and a flinching avian and fangs and an angry vex. It's not an unreasonable conclusion to come to. And they're still not necessarily buying into this idea of Scar being an abuser of some sort, no they know Scar, but... They can't just discard their concerns because of their feelings.

They know Scar, but... this version of him almost seems like a stranger.

...On the bright side, there are more Hermits on Scar's side than just Impulse! (not Mumbo though /sob)

Impulse and Gem were there during the rescue, specifically they were the two that saw how Grian let Scar near when he wouldn't allow that from anyone else. The way Scar's vex form faded as he embraced him. The way they held each other so intimately, the way Scar shushed and soothed him.

They know. And they saw that awful world. They understand more than most.

And Gem regularly spars with Scar! She's probably one of the few who is genuinely intrigued by this "new Scar." She likes him. She likes him just as much as she liked "old Scar."

Skizz comes around. He's a bit nosy and can be very critical, but he's also a pair with Impulse, let's be real. If Impulse sees the good in Scar, so will Skizz. Skizz is just gonna be a bit more of a pain in the butt sometimes, but Scar doesn't mind being held accountable and being kept in check. (Grian minds that people think they have to do that.)

Cleo is also a huge support. Imagine Scar asking them if he scares her. And Cleo just snorts like, "Scar, you could never scare me." She's literally undead! A vex doesn't startle them. Cleo is also the one to help dress Scar for the sleepover and cut his hair. Mama Cleo energy <3

And surprisingly, someone who is just undeniably on Scar's side and goes as far to say the other Hermits are completely out of line?

Doc.

Doc, who had Scar practically destroy his bionic arm on the ship during the rescue. (It's fine, it gave him an excuse to make upgrades.) Doc who is taking care of [redacted] and understands more than anyone what those two had to go through.

"Those Hermits, man, they love to get involved in everybody's business. Some of the things they say, so stupid."

Doc isn't scared of Scar. Just look at him, he's the scary one! (No, he's fluffy and soft. Soft for Scar and soft for the pesky bird.)
